Plans to re-establish sun routes ‘on the horizon’

April 15th, 2008

One airline is interested in starting routes to Alicante, Malaga and other Spanish destinations from Norwich International Airport this year, according to the managing director of the East Anglian hub.

Richard Jenner told the Norwich Evening News that these services - known as sun routes - could be offered again in the coming months, following Flybe’s decision to cancel them last July.

More routes into Spain from the UK may alert property investors to the country as accessibility to a nation is traditionally an important consideration for people who buy bricks and mortar abroad.

Mr Jenner told the newspaper: “Since Flybe pulled off that route we have been talking to about ten airlines - most of them want to start from next summer but there is one interested in starting this year.”

He added that the airport hopes to announce further information within the next two weeks.

Earlier this week, budget airline easyJet started routes from Manchester Airport to Malaga, having set up a base at the north-west hub.

Sporting event comes to Alicante

April 15th, 2008

La Sella Golf de Denia in Alicante will host the Valencian Community Investments European Ladies Golf Cup this week.

Having beaten the Algarve in its bid to host the competition, the venue will attract some of the best female golfers in the world between Thursday April 3rd and Sunday April 6th.

Comunitat Valenciana, the tourism website for the Region of Valencia, reports that players Trish Johnson and Ibenn Tinning chose to be present in this tournament despite lucrative offers to play in a conflicting event in the US.

The portal states that they were attracted to the Spanish golf course due to “the very specific nature of the La Sella competition”.

The pre-selection for the event means spectators will be able “to enjoy an unprecedented display of golf in Denia”, the site adds. Furthermore, the US and Australia will be competing in two types of matchplay over the four days, which will offer yet more excitement.

Major sporting events attract crowds of people, which is a factor property investors may consider when choosing a location. The city of Valencia recently hosted a world indoor athletics championship, proving the Region of Valencia is a credible sporting venue.

New publication highlights Spain’s benefits

March 27th, 2008

A new book, which includes “valuable information” for people looking to move to Spain, has been released.

Various issues are covered in the publication, including Spanish lifestyle, how to choose a location and the best ways to settle in the Mediterranean country.

We’ve Gone to Spain is written by Tom Provan, a former marketing and public relations professional who left England for southern Europe. Much of what is included in the book revolves around his personal experiences.

A great deal of what is stated is positive about the country, while a number of the stories he recalls may make readers laugh.

Mr Provan and his family chose the Costa del Sol as a place to reside, but the book highlights the benefits of a number of areas - including the Costa Brava.

In the internet version of the publication, the writer states: “The secret to success in buying the right property is the right research. And in every country the main consideration is location, location, location.”

Malaga taxi drivers choose not to strike

March 27th, 2008

Taxi drivers in the Costa del Sol tourist town of Malaga have opted not to go on strike in the build-up to this Easter weekend, it has been reported.

La Opinion de Malaga revealed that a written agreement produced by Malaga City Hall has prompted the workers to call off strike action they had planned earlier this month, according to TypicallySpanish.com.

Regular meetings will now be held between taxi drivers and the city hall from March 27th, while the drivers themselves will gather frequently to discuss matters related to the taxi-viability plan being suspended.

Prior to the decision, the planned protest over the unused licences of self-employed drivers being used in alternative ways, had threatened to cause problems on the roads during two of Malaga’s busiest days in springtime.

Budget airline easyJet recently announced that its UK to Malaga routes are going to be some of the busiest during the Easter period.

New plans to relieve road congestion in Alicante

March 27th, 2008

Motorists in Alicante province could soon be enjoying shorter journey times if proposals for a larger inland carriageway are given the go-ahead.

According to Typically Spanish, the infrastructure department at the Generalitat de Valencia has put forward a draft proposal for a new wider road to run inland from Vinalopo and ease congestion on the Alicante-Madrid motorway.

Under the road scheme, over 26 kilometres of the existing CV-83 road will be converted into a dual carriageway and a new connection with the neighbouring province of Murcia will be established.

Local officials in the towns close to the road, including Novelda, Monovar and Pinoso, are currently considering the proposals.

A second ring road around Alicante city was opened in December 2007 to improve access to the airport and other amenities on the Costa Blanca. The new road is divided into four toll sections and was constructed at a cost of €1 billion, Typically Spanish reported.

UK businesses ‘recruiting property owners in Spain’

February 27th, 2008

A growing number of British companies are recruiting expatriates living in southern Spain, it has emerged.

Due to a shortage of candidates in the domestic market, many firms are looking further afield to fill their vacancies, with technological advances meaning that workers do not need to be based in the same country as their employer to do their job.

PersonnelToday.com reports that telemarketing company Sense On Hold recently added ten British people living in Spain to its workforce. The new employees will not even have to travel back to the UK for initial training, as all elements of the job can be conducted online.

Recruitment expert Steve Mosser told the website: “The idea behind recruiting expats is that it doesn’t matter where you are to do this job, as long as you fill certain criteria.”

This arrangement means that British property owners on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca could enjoy all the benefits of living in Spain while working for a company based in their home country.

Property website BuyAssociation recently stated that many of the UK’s first-time homebuyers are looking to get on the property ladder in Spain because of the country’s more relaxed buying process.

Alicante to get new AVE station?

February 19th, 2008

A new station for high-speed trains could be built in Alicante province under proposals revealed by a group of local business leaders.

Located at Bacarot, the AVE station would serve both Alicante city and the nearby Costa Blanca city of Elche, with businesses hoping that the development will help to create an important new metropolitan area in southern Spain.

The ministry of development will now consider the plans, which have been put forward by the Business Confederation for Alicante Province, Typically Spanish reports.

If given the green light, the new station would also provide transport links for Alicante’s El Altet Airport. Construction is not likely to begin for several years, however.

According to official statistics released last month, El Altet is now the sixth busiest airport in Spain, with passenger numbers increasing by three per cent last year.

The train station could also be used by holidaymakers and property owners travelling to other popular Costa Blanca locations such as Torrevieja and Santa Pola.

Cartoon exhibition opens in Alicante

February 7th, 2008

People with an appreciation of cartoon art are advised to head to southern Spain this month, as an interesting new exhibition has opened in Alicante.

The Enrique 1972-2005 exhibition contains a selection of drawings by the celebrated Spanish cartoonist Enrique Perez Penedo, who was born in the Costa Blanca city.

Giving visitors the chance to view the work of one of Spain’s most gifted and humorous cartoonists, the exhibition runs until February 18th, according to Communitat Valenciana.

Penedo’s work has appeared in the local newspaper Informacion de Alicante, as well as Spain’s leading sports publication La Marca and the magazine Panorama Azul. He is also president of the Spanish branch of the European Federation of Cartoonists’ Organisations.

Alicante is currently a major attraction for cartoon fans for another reason - the new Asterix movie was shot on location in the city and premiered at the Teatro Principal on Tuesday (February 5th). Nearby areas such as Benidorm and Santa Pola can also be seen in the film.
